Best Practice Briefing: The Data Protection Act - Key Points and Updates

Use of personal data is now a vast industry. Whilst there are many benefits the potential for damage and distress to be caused by inappropriate use of information is now starkly apparent. The Data Protection Act has been criticised for being complex and interpretive, but it is essentially a broad framework to protect us from misuse or abuse of our data and because of the many varied uses of data, it endeavours to cover all areas. This briefing seeks to highlight the key points of the legislation for those tasked with ensuring use of information is legally compliant.

Best Practice Briefing: Using Portable Media

Portable media is any form of electronic data store that is small enough to be easily transported. This includes USB memory sticks, CDs, DVDs, Memory cards and floppy discs. These are the most common media, but you also need to consider portable media players (such as iPods), external hard disc drives and tape drives.

What are the threats from portable media?

If there is no control over portable media, then individuals will be able to copy or indeed remove large volumes of organisational data. There are many problems associated with this. The briefing addresses the key issues and best practice.

Briefing - Best Practice Advice: Information Governance Toolkit vs. 6 for Acute and Primary Care Sectors

The Information Governance Toolkit has been developed by the Department of Health to measure organisational compliance with legislation and regulations relating to the handling of information. These requirements include the Data Protection Act, The Freedom of Information Act and standards for information security, clinical record keeping and corporate records management. Version 6 was release in June 2008. This guidance highlights key developments in version 6, relating to the Acute and Primary Care sectors. It sets out best practice advice to meet the updated requirements, but does not cover the whole toolkit.
