Useful Resources for Caldicott Guardians

Caldicott Guardian Council

The new Caldicott Guardian Council is situated within Connecting for Health. It is a recently formed body which is UK-wide, consists of elected members and which has a constitution. By the end of the calendar year, it will have elected membership from all UK countries (between 16 and 20 members).

The Council, and its Secretariat, are currently engaged in drafting up a strategic work plan.

There are now a number of resources available for Caldicott Guardians on the Connecting for Health web site, including job descriptions, a newsletter and a new Caldicott Guardian Manual

Confidentiality Codes of Practice

Two excellent Codes of Practice, which cover all aspects of confidentiality in relation to patient information, are:

1.  Confidentiality: NHS Code of Practice

2.  Confidentiality: Code of Practice for Health and Social Care in Wales

This is perhaps the best such Code that we are aware of. The content is very user-friendly, clearly set out and straightforward in its approach. It is also concise as well as comprehensive.

Circulars

Useful circulars on the Data Protection Act 1998 and patient information can be found at the Department of Health web site. For HSC 2000/009: Data Protection Act 1998: protection and use of patient information

Data Protection Act 1998

The Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas, has emphasised in his Annual Report the importance of protecting personal data. The Data Protection Act 1998 contains within it provision for the “processing” or management of personal data and how subjects of the data can access it.
